Brock and Lekshmy met online and had been together for two years when Brock began planning his proposal. Although they had already signed their marriage papers earlier in June, Lekshmy had shared one wish: she wanted a real proposal, something romantic and memorable.

When Brock reached out to me, he wasn’t sure where to plan it. After talking through his vision, I guided him toward locations that would carry some meaning and were visually striking. He chose Parc Jean-Drapeau.
Brock chose Parc Jean-Drapeau because of it skyline that reminded him of New York, a city that holds a special place in Lekshmy’s heart. Within the park, we narrowed it down to a location that offered both open skyline views of Montréal and quieter natural spaces. In fact, it happened to be the place where they had their first date.
The plan was simple: I would stay hidden while Brock led Lekshmy to the location. To keep the surprise intact, he told her they were meeting a friend, Melinda. As they made their way through the park, Melinda conveniently called to say she was running late, giving Brock the perfect window to propose.

Everything was set. I had placed the bouquet nearby, the light was soft, and the location was completely empty until, suddenly, a group of tourists arrived out of nowhere and stopped exactly where the proposal was meant to happen.
With Brock and Lekshmy approaching in the distance, I quickly stepped in, kindly asking the group to move. They were incredibly understanding and shifted just in time. Moments later, a family began heading toward the same spot, and once again, I found myself gently intervening to preserve the surprise.
Then, as if perfectly timed, the space cleared.
Brock walked Lekshmy into position and asked the question he had been waiting to ask. Her reaction was immediate: surprise, joy, and laughter all at once. One of the first things she said was: “I guess we’re not going to eat pizza with Melinda.” It was such a genuine, lighthearted moment ,one that stayed with me long after.

After the proposal, I approached them and introduced myself, explaining that Brock hired me to document this moment. We then explored Parc Jean-Drapeau together, moving through some of the most scenic areas I had carefully scouted earlier that week.
Their session felt natural. We walked, talked, and captured a series of images that reflected not only the beauty of the location, but the ease and connection between them. There was so much laughter throughout the hour, it truly felt like documenting two people completely in their element.

After the session, Brock shared these kind words:
“Melissa showed up early, was very professional, but also very personable and easy to get along with. She took amazing pictures and we were happy with the results.”
Île Sainte-Hélène offers an incredible variety of settings, making it one of the most versatile locations for a proposal in Montreal.
Couples can choose a skyline backdrop overlooking the city, just like Lekshmy and Brock did, where the view of Montreal adds a cinematic, almost New York–like atmosphere to the moment.

If you venture deeper into the island, the environment shifts completely. Tree-lined paths and quieter corners create a sense of being immersed in nature, offering a more secluded and intimate feel for the proposal or engagement session.
What makes Île Sainte-Hélène especially unique is this balance between urban energy and natural calm. You never feel too far from the city, yet you can easily find yourself surrounded by greenery and stillness.

It’s also a dog-friendly location, which makes it ideal for couples who want to include their pets in the experience, just like Sonia and Hugo did during their session.
Overall, Île Sainte-Hélène is a beautiful choice for couples looking for intimacy, flexibility, and a setting that feels both connected to Montreal and quietly removed from it at the same time.
A successful proposal is never just about the location, it’s about timing, intention and coordination.
Choosing a place like Parc Jean-Drapeau allows flexibility, but the key is understanding how to use the space. Light, privacy, and movement all play a role in how the moment feels.

Working with a photographer also helps ensure everything stays discreet and smooth. From staying hidden to anticipating interruptions and guiding the flow of the moment, every detail contributes to keeping the surprise intact.
The goal is always the same: to create a moment that feels effortless, even though it’s carefully designed behind the scenes.
