When Mondiana contacted me for her family session, she told me she wanted to document one of the last moments she would breastfeed Daren. She knew this chapter of motherhood was slowly coming to an end and wanted to preserve it before it became a memory.

She hoped to schedule the session quickly, and since I already had an engagement session planned at the Montreal Botanical Garden, I suggested we meet there afterward. It was the perfect setting for a relaxed and intimate family photography session surrounded by nature and soft summer light.

Mondiana arrived with her husband, her son Daren, and her mother, who had recently moved to Canada to be closer to her family. I loved that this session naturally became about multiple generations and the people surrounding Daren during this season of life.

Why the Montreal Botanical Garden Is Perfect for Family Photos

The Botanical Garden is one of my favorite locations for family photography sessions in Montreal. It offers quiet pathways, soft greenery, beautiful textures, and a variety of backgrounds while still feeling peaceful and intimate.

For lifestyle family sessions, I always look for locations that allow children to move naturally and explore freely. The gardens create the perfect environment for candid moments without making the session feel overly posed.

A Lifestyle Approach to Family Photography with Toddlers

We started with simple seated family photos to give Daren time to warm up. Like most two-year-olds, he quickly became more interested in exploring the gardens than sitting still and honestly, that is exactly how sessions with toddlers should feel.

Before every family session with young children, I always let parents know that I do not expect perfection. Toddlers are curious, energetic, emotional, and constantly moving. Instead of forcing poses or expecting them to follow directions for an hour, I prefer a more lifestyle and documentary approach.

As expected, after a few portraits, Daren wanted to run everywhere. He had just woken up from his nap and was full of energy. We played games, chased him around the pathways, and laughed while his grandma tried to catch him beside me. Those moments may feel chaotic while they happen, but they often become the memories families treasure most later on.

Capturing a Breastfeeding Session Naturally

After playing, Mondiana felt it was the right time to breastfeed Daren. The atmosphere shifted instantly. Everything became softer and slower. You could feel how emotional that moment was for her, knowing this phase would soon come to an end as Daren continued growing.

Breastfeeding sessions are about so much more than feeding a child. They document comfort, connection, routine, and motherhood in its most honest form. So many mothers realize later that they have countless photos of their children, but very few images showing themselves nurturing and caring for them.

My approach during these moments is always gentle and unobtrusive. I want families to feel comfortable enough to simply exist together while I document the connection naturally.

Why Family Photos Matter Beyond Childhood

Later, we ended the session near the fountain with a few final family portraits. Before leaving, I also encouraged Mondiana to take photos with her husband and her mother.

When children arrive, couples often stop appearing in photos together, and we rarely think to document ourselves with our parents as adults. Yet years later, those are often the images that become the most valuable.

Family photography is not only about documenting children growing up. It is also about preserving relationships, family history, and the people who shape our lives during each season.
