After nine months together as a long-distance couple, Coby in the US, Esther in Montreal, they both knew they had something worth keeping. Coby reached out to me with a clear vision: he wanted to plan his proposal at La Grande Roue de Montreal, the iconic Ferris wheel standing at the edge of the Old Port waterfront. It had to be there. That’s where their Montreal story began.

Esther had just graduated as a flight attendant, and Coby was flying in to celebrate with her. She thought the trip was about her graduation. It was also about the rest of their lives.
Coby had a strong instinct for the location. The Old Port was where they had their first date in Montreal, and La Grande Roue was the landmark that stayed with him. The combination of the Ferris wheel, the St. Lawrence River, and the historic stone of the port creates a backdrop you simply can’t replicate anywhere else in the city.

Working with a La Grande Roue de Montréal proposal photographer means working with someone who knows the pier’s rhythms, when it’s crowded, when it’s calm, and exactly where to stand to disappear into the scene until the moment demands otherwise. We mapped out the plan together: I would blend into the surroundings, camera ready, while Coby led Esther toward the bridge near the Ferris wheel. At just the right moment, he would get down on one knee.
I arrived 30 minutes ahead of schedule. One of the most consistent pieces of advice I give couples planning a surprise proposal at the Old Port waterfront is this: weekday mornings are a different world. Before 10 AM, the area around La Grande Roue is calm, almost empty, the intimacy you’d never expect from one of the city’s most visited spots.

When Coby arrived, he sent me a quick text, letting me know he saw me. I spotted them walking toward the bridge, and within moments, he was on one knee.
Esther told me afterward that she had a feeling something might be coming. But there’s a significant difference between having a feeling and actually living the moment, with the person you love asking the question.
The tears were real. Joyful, surprised, overwhelmed, the kind that happens when something you hoped for suddenly becomes real.

We had an original date set. A week before, it was clear the conditions weren’t going to work. We moved everything back by a week.

This is something worth knowing if you’re planning a surprise proposal at La Grande Roue or anywhere in Montreal: the weather doesn’t care about your timeline, and outdoor proposals need a built-in backup plan. The rescheduled date gave us sun, a light breeze off the river, and comfortable temperatures, genuinely better than what we would have had the first time. If you are on vacation and can’t reschedule, I would suggest to prepare a second location that you could use in case of rain.

Once the moment happened, we had the rest of the morning together. I had mapped out several spots in advance, varying light conditions, different textures, different distances from the water and we moved through them naturally as the morning unfolded.

Coby and Esther were incredibly natural together. At one point they started laughing at me because I couldn’t stop telling them how well they were doing. From time to time, I show previews on the back of my camera during the session, which helps them relax and stay present rather than wondering how things look.

Esther also had a few specific photos in mind, and we made sure to bring every one of them to life. Sharing your vision is always encouraged, it’s what makes the photos feel genuinely yours, not just beautiful.
Once the session wrapped, I headed home to edit a sneak peek so they could share the news with friends and family right away. After seeing the first few images, Esther left a review on Google:

The full gallery was ready the next day. I suggested they wait and open it together, make a small moment of it but Esther couldn’t wait.

Hi Melissa,
Thank you so much for sending the full gallery! Honestly, I couldn’t even wait until Coby and I were together, I opened it right away because I was too excited to see the photos!

If proposing at the Montreal Ferris wheel is calling to you or anywhere else in the city, I’d love to hear about it. As a Montreal surprise proposal photographer, every proposal I work on starts with a conversation about what matters to you: the location, the timing, what you want her to feel, and what you want to remember forever.
From there, we build a plan that makes it look effortless. Want to know more? Just send me an email

Is La Grande Roue de Montréal a good spot to propose? Yes. The combination of the Ferris wheel, the St. Lawrence River, and the Old Port architecture creates a backdrop that’s both dramatic and deeply Montréal. The morning light on the waterfront is especially beautiful.
When is the best time to propose near La Grande Roue? Weekday mornings before 10 AM are the quietest. You’ll have space, better light, and a much more intimate atmosphere than you’d get on a weekend afternoon.
Do you work with long-distance couples or partners visiting Montreal from the US? Often, yes. Coby drove from the US specifically for this proposal, a long-distance relationship that ended with a ring at La Grande Roue de Montreal. We handle everything remotely: timing, positioning, signals so that by the day of, everything runs smoothly without you managing anything in the moment.
What if the weather is bad on our date? We reschedule. It’s that simple, and it’s always built into the plan. If rescheduling isn’t possible, we find another location and make it work.
Do you photograph proposals at other spots in the Old Port? Of course. Montréal has several locations that work beautifully depending on the time of year, the light, and the atmosphere you’re after. Just scroll down to see a few of them.
