Julissa and Ryan met in 2021 over coffee—a modern love story sparked by connection and curiosity. That first date turned into something lasting, and before long, marriage felt like the natural next chapter. In a quiet and heartfelt moment, Ryan proposed at Julissa’s parents’ home, following the traditional gesture of asking for their blessing first.

When Ryan and I first connected, he explained why photography mattered so deeply to them:

“Memories are just a snapshot of what you remember. They’re not always the reality.”

Though both he and Julissa described themselves as shy in front of the camera, I assured them that making people feel natural and confident is part of what I offer—especially when working with couples who value intimacy, meaning, and cultural heritage.

A Wedding Day Steeped in Chinese Tradition

The day began at Julissa’s parents’ home, where Ryan was met by her sisters for the traditional Chinese wedding door games. In Chinese culture, the bride is cherished, and it’s customary for the groom to prove he’s worthy. With red envelopes (hongbao) in hand, Ryan offered symbolic gifts to gain entry—an act believed to bless the couple’s future with good fortune, happiness, and fertility.

Once inside, he faced a series of playful (and physically demanding!) tasks: 100 push-ups (generously shared with his brother-in-law), and ddkaji game (envelope-flipping challenge), and reading a heartfelt message aloud—three times, at Julissa’s request because it was never loud enough. These games are more than entertainment; they carry symbolic meaning, reinforcing the groom’s dedication to his bride.

Eventually, Julissa appeared in a stunning traditional Qun Kwa, and the first tea ceremony took place—a cornerstone of Chinese weddings. They served tea to their elders as a gesture of respect, receiving hongbao and gold jewelry in return. The ceremony closed with sweet soup, symbolizing a sweet life ahead.

Heritage and Elegance, Woven Together

After the ceremony, I asked the family to step aside so I could photograph the couple in a quiet moment together—just the two of them, wrapped in tradition and emotion.

As Julissa stepped outside, she was shielded by a red umbrella and showered with rice—elements of traditional Chinese symbolism used to protect the bride and wish the couple well as they transition into married life.

From there, we continued to Ryan’s sister’s garden, where the second tea ceremony was set. It was an intimate and thoughtful setup—sunny, private, and perfect for honouring his family’s side with the same depth of tradition.

A Seamless Fusion: From Qun Kwa to Classic Elegance

Julissa changed into a western dress, and we took time to photograph both looks—something I always encourage for couples planning a multicultural wedding. Her attentive sisters helped with every detail, supporting not just Julissa, but the flow of the day for everyone.

Before leaving for the Palais de Justice de Montréal, we arranged a quiet first look in the garden. These private moments allow couples to pause, breathe, and connect—a calm interlude before the official vows.

The civil ceremony was smooth and heartfelt. You could see it in their eyes: this was the beginning of something deeply personal and sincere.

We closed the day with family portraits and editorial-style couple photos nearby. I had prepared a moodboard in advance to ensure their images would be polished yet natural, with that soft, romantic edge that defines my work.

A Thoughtful Approach to Capturing Tradition

This wedding was a beautiful reminder that intimate celebrations can carry just as much grandeur and cultural richness as large-scale events. Julissa and Ryan’s day was deeply rooted in tradition, yet modern in its tone—a perfect reflection of their story.

When they received their gallery, Ryan messaged me immediately:

“We’re so happy with the photos. They’re fantastic.”

Beyond just taking beautiful photos, my goal is to make couples feel seen—in both their love and their culture.
